What to do

You can do all sorts of outdoor activities up here; go fishing, walk in the mountains, practice windsurfing, hanggliding, mountainclimbing and bicycling – or even play golf in midnight sun at Lofoten Links at Gimsøy. Mountain walking can be recommended as you get a fantastic view of the islands – Himmeltindan is the highest mountain on the Vestvågøy island. Also check this site on Seasons on Lofoten. If you prefer history and cultural activities, there is also plenty to do. In the winter, the Northern Lights can be amazing and well worth a visit.

The Vikings left the largest house in the Viking world in Lofoten. It was excavated in 1986-1989, and you can visit the Lofotr Viking museum at Borg – just 15 minutes drive from Smedvik. Moreover, it is recommended to visit small villages like Henningsvær and Kabelvåg, where you will find the Lofoten Aquarium closeby, at Storvågan. Also, a drive around to small places like Unstad, Eggum, Steine, Ballstad etc. is a nice way to discover the islands.

Regarding culture, three is a lot to see. One suggestion is to discover the art pieces placed at 5 different spots in the islands (Vågan, Vestvågøy/Eggum, Flakstad, Moskenes and Røst) – as part of the project Artscape Nordland where artists have made sculptures, placed at well selected spots around in 32 of the 45 munucipalities in Nordland. Once a year, the Lofoten International Chamber Music Festival as well as the Lofoten Piano Festival is taking place in a number of churches in the islands.

Contact the tourist office in Svolvær to get guidance on what to do. Ahead of the journey, a good place to start the planning is the official website for Lofoten. The site visitlofoten.com is also recommended.

You can also have a look at the local site of Vestvågøy to see what´s on in the region, or read more in general about the county (in Norwegian).
